There’ve been quite a few REAL ID mandate implementation changes due to Covid. And, many travelers ask, “do I need a REAL ID, and by when?” Well, it’s easy. You’ll learn everything you need to know about REAL ID. Just keep reading.
Due to Covid-related challenges at Department of Motor Vehicle offices around the US, the deadline for American air travelers’ to secure a REAL ID has been extended from October 2021 to May 3, 2023.
Do You Need REAL ID?
The simple answer is…if, after May 3, 2023, you plan to fly domestically, and are 18 years of age or older, you must present one of the following at airport security checkpoints: a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, a state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification, like a passport.
How do you know that you have a REAL ID? A verified REAL ID card will have a gold star on the top corner of your ID card. However, several states use different processes. Check with your state and verify the requirements.
Since getting a REAL ID isn’t currently necessary, there’s no need to be anxious. However, we suggest if you need to renew your driver’s license in the near term, and you don’t have or want to use a passport when traveling domestically, why not upgrade to REAL ID? Most travelers will wait until the last minute and if yours is already in hand you’ll be well ahead of the crowd.
